If you’re about to use a Megger tester or any other kind of insulation test on your electrical system, you need to be quite careful before using them. If you don’t follow the instructions carefully, you could hurt yourself and the electrical system you’re working with. Here are a few tips before using any testing device, to make sure you get accurate measurements and keep yourself safe.
Of course the first step that must be taken when working with any electrical system is that you need to disconnect the power. Not doing so could result in shock and although this sounds like common sense, it’s a step that’s often overlooked. What might not be as obvious is to also unplug any electronics that are connected to the system. Even though the power will be turned off during the testing process, these could become damaged in the process if left plugged in – and it could be a costly mistake.
Lastly, one of the most important tips when testing insulation is to make sure you’re using a tester with the right voltage for your system; and if you don’t know the voltage of your system, you must find out. If you’re really unsure and still need to use a tester, choose insulation testing that has low-voltage, as a high voltage test set can irreparably damage the wires and cables.
