Testing the Reliability of Joined Metals Using a DLRO

Metals joined together like in bus bars, circuit breaker contacts and terminals of electrical components are prone to deterioration during normal operation. The electrical and thermal stress causes corrosion to develop on the metal joints. Contaminants like dirt, moisture and grease can also speed up the deterioration of the metal junction. When the junctions accumulate rust, carbon deposits dirt or other contaminants, the resistance may increase causing a severe drop in the efficiency of power transfer. This can cause serious problems in the electrical system and may cause component failure.

To assess the conditions of joined metals, technicians measure for the junction resistance. Ideally, a good junction should have an extremely low resistance. A deviation in the acceptable resistance range indicates a problem in the junction which should be reconditioned.

A DLRO is a device used for measuring extremely low resistance in joined metals. Since it measures low resistance, the resistance of the test leads may add up to the readings. To get around this problem, DLROs use a Thomson Bridge input to isolate the lead resistance for accurate measurements.
