Speed Up Transformer Diagnostics with a Sweep Frequency Response Analyzer

  • Uncategorized

n the past, transformer diagnostics required a lot of manpower, time and complicated machinery. Most transformers are inside a tank filled with insulation oil. You have to remove the transformer from the tank in order to effectively test and inspect the transformer. This means you have to use a machine to lift the core and several men assisting. This translates to higher labor costs and wasted time. With the advancement of technology, you can now test transformers in a matter of minutes without untanking.

Sweep Frequency Response Analysis is a method of diagnosing problems in transformers without untanking. It detects internal problems by injecting a test signal to the windings of the transformer. The resistive-inductive-capacitive characteristics of different parts of the transformer components then resonates and gives out a distinctive band of frequencies. The tester captures these frequencies for the technician to compare to the transformer nameplate values. Even the smallest changes in geometry of the transformer components will cause a significant deviation from the baseline data.

If you need an SFRA, you might be interested in some of these Sweep Frequency Response Analyzers. These devices are some of the best on the market today and offer excellent reliability and measurement accuracy.
