A transformer’s windings can be displaced because of mechanical forces such as vibration during transport or by over current. When this happens, the ability of a transformer to withstand stress becomes limited and may eventually fail.
A leakage reactance module is a test tool used to detect winding deformation in transformers. The test is done by making a short circuit on the secondary windings and measuring the impedance of the transformer. A popular tester used by most maintenance personnel is the Doble M4110 leakage reactance module. This module can measure impedance from 0.1 to 700 ohms and a variable output voltage of 0 to 280 volts. It makes testing easy because it allows you to enter the name-plate information and it will suggest test parameters to use. Then it automatically calculates the short circuit impedance of the transformer. This test set also allows you to measure inductances from 250 micro Henries up to 1.8 Henries and resistances from 0.1 ohms to 700 ohms.
