Insulation oils need to be as pure as possible because contaminants can lower their breakdown voltage and therefore cause problems. The lowered resistivity of insulation oil can cause currents to flow and result in short circuits in transformers or capacitors. It is important to assess the breakdown voltage of insulating oil regularly to prolong the operating life of the electrical components.
To help you assess the purity of insulation oil, an oil test cell like the Doble OTC and a power factor test set like the M4000 are used. The oil test cell holds a sample of the insulation oil and the power factor tester applies the high voltage to the oil. A voltage is applied to the oil and is slowly increased until breakdown is reached. If the insulation oil has a lower than normal breakdown voltage, then it is necessary to replace the insulation oil.
