HV Diagnostics cable testing may sound like something super technical and complex to perform. However, it’s actually a very simple high voltage test that measures the accuracy, the dependability, and the strength of any particular overhead cables, such as those used for electricity.
When testing cables, either that are overhead or that are being used in an industrial setting, ahigh voltage test set will be used. This set will apply a certain amount of voltage that is over and above the amount that the cable has been designed to withstand. The cable is then checked to make sure that it can withstand the amount of voltage being applied throughout the entire duration of the test, and then afterwards to make sure that no damage has been done. If the cable did not stand up to the test, it must be taken out of service and replaced with a better, sounder cable.
There are a few different forms of testing and in the past, DC testing has been the test of choice. However over the years, VLF testing and 50 Hz have exceeded the overall use of DC testing. Although DC tests are still used for things such as sheath testing, the other forms have gained more so in popularity for overall use.
