The windings can short out or draw too much current from the power supply if undetected. You should test the windings regularly to detect issues that are just starting and let you correct the problem before it even causes the motor to fail.

Polarization index and measuring the insulation resistance are the common tests done to determine the condition of motor winding insulation. This tests are much safer compared to DC Hipot testing. The very high test voltage applied in hipot testing can cause the insulator to deteriorate or breakdown. That’s why many do not recommend this test especially on motors that have been in operation for a while.

When choosing test equipment for motors, consider insulation resistance test sets or megohmmeter. Most testers integrate multiple testing functions in one tool. This reduces the need for separate test instruments. Some models also offer automatic computation of test results, thus simplifying and speeding up your testing routine.
